About Rethink35

Rethink35 is a grassroots campaign (501c4) opposing TxDOT’s proposed I-35 expansion through Austin and pushing for a more sustainable, equitable alternative, starting with a study of alternatives, including the Rethink35 reroute-boulevard proposal.

Founded in 2020, we have harnessed collective action from the community and elected leaders through public and political engagement, rallies and other events, social media, legal action, and more to win a better project and to address the systemic causes of damaging highway projects. Our campaign has changed the conversation around I-35 and what a better future could be.

About you

As a board member, you will play a key role in guiding Rethink35’s strategy and goals regarding I-35 and potentially the future of other freeways in the Austin area and beyond.

Board candidate qualities

Possible candidate qualities may include, but are not required or limited to:

• Prior nonprofit experience as a board member, committee member, or as staff

• Volunteer experience with Rethink35 or other organizations and causes

• Skills and knowledge relevant to our board’s work, including organizational and strategic development, personnel management and onboarding, finance/accounting, fundraising, political engagement, communications, community engagement, government engagement, transportation planning, local history, freeway fighting, and TxDOT’s I-35 Capital Express project

• Amiability, supportiveness of others, ability to work well in a team, passion for the cause

• Embeddedness in the community, including connections to local residents, organizations, and businesses

• Represent a community impacted by I-35, and/or other highways, or are personally impacted

• Commitment to Rethink35’s mission and our values of community and inclusion

Board member expectations

• Serve a one or two year term, starting August 2024

• Attend quarterly board meetings and other special-called meetings and ensure meetings are productive

• Join and actively participate in board committees as needed

• Respond to messages, via Discord and/or other methods including email, in a timely fashion and participate in board discussions and votes

• Act as an ambassador for the organization at events, in daily conversations, and elsewhere

• Knowledge of Rethink35’s history and staying up to date on activities and developments
